Sean FitzHoward: A Bay Nature Local Environmental Hero
by Beth Slatkin — published February 01, 2012
“Sean is one of the most dedicated youth I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 15 years. Her determination in promoting conservation and teaching stewardship to others is quite remarkable.”
-- San Francisco Bay Estuary Education Program Director Patti Vance
Each year, Bay Nature Institute honors several individuals who are making outstanding contributions to the understanding and stewardship of the natural world of the Bay Area.
This year's winner in the Environmental Educator category is high school student Sean FitzHoward, a junior at San Francisco’s Lowell High School.

Sean founded the Protect the Bay Club to educate fellow students at Lowell about San Francisco Bay and inspire them to help protect it. Sean and her team participate in beach cleanups and habitat restoration efforts, and organize fundraisers for Bay-related nonprofits, including selling popcorn outside a video store in Bernal Heights with an old-fashioned popcorn machine she found and helped to restore.
At the age of 14, Sean was a finalist in the 2009 River of Words art and poetry contest for her poem "I Am...", about the strength and the fragility of nature.
She is currently an intern with the California Academy of Sciences.
