Education Award for Bay Nature Founder
produced by Rick Bacigalupi
On November 7, 2009, Bay Nature co-founder, publisher, and executive director David Loeb was awarded the 2009 John Muir Environmental Education Conservation Award. Each year for the last 32 years, the John Muir Association of Martinez, CA, has recognized leaders in Bay Area conservation with its annual awards, and we are proud to have David's efforts recognized as part of that rich heritage in 2009 - Bay Nature magazine's ninth year in circulation.
According to the Association, the Environmental Education Conservation Award is "for outstanding contribution by an individual(s) (professional or volunteer), business, organization or public agency to environmental education, whether in a classroom or otherwise."
We think that describes David's work - and we're happy the John Muir Association agrees. Since launching Bay Nature magazine with Malcolm Margolin (publisher of Heyday Books) in 2001, David Loeb has served as editor and then publisher of Bay Nature and as executive director of the nonprofit Bay Nature Institute. During that time, David has shaped Bay Nature into a unique hybrid that's both a journalistic enterprise reaching a general audience and a powerful educational tool collaborating with a wide array of partners, from grassroots organizations working on local conservation projects to public agencies managing extensive parks and open space.
